I don't see a need to ever remain friends with any ex partners unless you have children with them.
IF a person (male or female) remains friends with an ex and they are my current partner I'd be suspicious. If they are merely friendly... well then that's called being an adult.

Sometimes it's also because of unconscious attraction. Girls will rationalize attraction as an appreciation of the person, and lack of attraction as a dislike of the person. For the sake of making their lives easier, people will excommunicate anyone they consider a liability, regardless of whether or not they did anything wrong.
