what does this conversation with my ex imply?

me: its almost my birthday, are you excited cause im excited? (:

him: yes but im too broke to get you anything ):

me: its okay, we weren't even talking my last birthday..so your friendship is enough

him: im sorry

its been almost three years

still nothing makes sense

me: whatd you mean?

him: my mind is still quite bothered

me: by what though?

him: your face :P

me: whaaattttt lol

him: its not something to think about

BACKGROUND INFO: He and I broke up last year, we were supposed to get back together. We got in a fight, stopped talking for a few months, and when we started talking again I still thought we were getting back together. About two months after we start talking again, he starts dating a new girl. Theyve been together almost 6 months now. She goes to school in another state. He says he loves her but he and I talk everyday and hang out sometimes. I love him and I can't get over him. I've had 4 boyfriends since he started dating that girl and I just can't seem to connect with anyone. Not talking to him solves nothing because I tried it several times.
