reader, anonymous, writes (16 February 2015): Its a no brainer that we gain weight when we excersize less and eat more we gain weight. If you are in the age range you put, you are even in more trouble with your weight as at this age when women go into premenopausal stage, metabolizm slows down a lot.
One thing thati understood long ago that helps me keep my weight under control, the more you eat the more you want to eat.
Instead of counting calories I had to find ways to start craving food less. I went on line, did multiple researches, and found a solution: salads. There is only 45cal in a large salad. I eat salads at least twice a day, it fills me up, and cravings are gone. The solution is simple and very productive. I can it right before I go to bed, there is no time limit.

reader, anonymous, writes (15 February 2015): Ever since I was 19 years old, my weight has fluctuated. I'm 34 now. Luckily, I've been at a healthy weight, and one to my personal liking, for the most part. But there have been a handful of times that I gained about 20 lbs. usually during stressful times. I gained the freshman 15 (was more like 20). Then lost it. In my mid 20's I went through a depression and gained 20 lbs again. And again lost it. And about a year ago, due to depression again, was the biggest weight gain, 30 lbs. And I lost it all.
When I had gained weight, my biggest problem was uncontrollable munchies. So to lose weight, what I do is I stay away from foods I crave for munchies. For instance, when I gained weight, I was eating a lot of junk food and ordering a lot of take out. So to lose weight I never order take out, not even by chance and I don't eat any junk food. In addition, I stay away from all breads, crackers, butter, spreads, mayo, cereals, sugar, red meat, cheese, and most dairy. Like I don't even look at these products. I stay away from all condiments except sea salt and black pepper.
I only eat organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, non fat yogurt (cause it is a probiotic that aids in weight loss), and occasionally (2-3x a week) organic fish, seafood, chicken and eggs. The only fat I'll eat is from organic flax seeds, nuts and seeds. I like almonds and pumpkin seeds. And often sprinkle them on my salads. And extra virgin olive oil or avocado. I love oysters too because not only are they delicious but they have next to no calories or fat and yet are full of minerals, protein, zinc and antioxidants that help your skin look youthful. I always have carrot sticks in the fridge for if I feel like snacking. No fattening dip! Just the carrots. Or I'll make low cal pre-made stuff I put in Tupperware to later snack on like fish or shrimp ceviche and garbanzo salad with garlic and hearts of palm. I'll also make a pot of soup, like vegetarian lentil or sweet potato kale. And nosh on that throughout the day.
I recently got a juicer and have been juicing once a day. I usually juice organic beets, carrots, celery, lime, cucumber, ginger, and parsley. I usually add a little piece of fruit to sweeten the juice, like an orange, apple or pineapple.
If you stick to only eating these things while completely cutting out all the bad stuff, and also get into the habit of eating little portions throughout the day rather than eating big meals in one sitting, you will start seeing results by next week. Especially since you are going to the gym.

It's a mind game. That's why the "New Year's Resolution" is so popular on January 1st and then forgotten by January 8th.
In order to succeed, your goal can't simply be to "look hot" for graduation. It's to change your relationship with food and get to the point where exercising and moving gets you that "high" feeling.
Everyone starts enthusiastically. They make goals, set calorie limits, resolve to cut out their favorite "sin" foods, whether it's sweet or greasy, and then they either take out that gym membership or buy that equipment (from rollerblades to a treadmill to that elliptical machine).
Then the next day, boy does the pain set in as the muscles and bones that hadn't been used start hurting. We realized there were muscles we didn't even know we had! When I was in high school in gym class, there was a big sign in the locker room that said "Did you know that there are 640 muscle groups in the human body?? You do now." and some of us used to pound that sign before every weight resistance workout.
You've gotta do it right. Don't fall for brain tricks that you've earned a "cheat" which stretches into a weekend, or set unrealistic goals for losing 30 pounds in 2 weeks (unless you're very obese). Visiting a dietician is one of the best investments you could possibly do, and using a personal trainer at the start of your gym is essential for preserving your bones and getting the most out of your workouts.
My younger brother's college job was as a personal trainer for a large gym chain, and he would tell me that easily over 80% who start a weight loss program abandon it within the first month, and of the 20% who stick with it, 15% drop within the first 6 months. Of the 5% who stick it out and get their results, over 90% of them regain the weight back after ending the strenuous program, many gaining more than they had before because their metabolism is in freakout mode.
That's why I say that it's a lifestyle change. You have to incorporate fundamental habit changes one part at a time. Stuff like Nutrisystem and Jenny Craig and other diets where food is sent to you are all good for losing the weight, but the best weight management system is one that you can create and set up. Fad diets like Atkins or South Beach offer the basic weight loss results, but at best, the weight is regained quickly after going into "maintenance" mode, and at worst, vital organs are damaged by chemicals and malnutrition, like the liver.
Also, don't fall for mind games or word acrobatics. A colleague of mine who had a new year resolution to lose weight had an enthusiastic start and then hit an early plateau after only a few weeks.
On her Facebook, the reason why was clear to me, but she didn't see it and actually got pissed at me for saying so. She had posted a recipe for "Monster Cookie Protein Bars" which were supposed to be an energy supplement to help workouts and curb appetite. Heh, upon inspection between this "diet recipe" and an actual recipe for those classic "monster cookies", the ingredients and cook time were EXACTLY the same! She was eating cookies disguised as protein bars, right down to the M&M's and the chocolate chips! She was also eating "low fat" popcorn, which ended up only being 10 calories less than "regular fat" popcorn. Basically, she was in a marketing-induced state of denial.
There are no shortcuts. Do it right, and plan on the change for life. When you get past the mind games and hit your stride, then you'll start envisioning things like marathons and outdoor fun stuff like flight suits, skiing, cross-country biking, work baseball or volleyball leagues (or whatever other sports league) and other things that make life wonderful. Then before you realize it, that hot little bikini that seems unreachable now starts actually looking like a possibility.
Talk to a doctor and a dietician. Best time you'll ever spend when it comes to weight loss.
