A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

This is just an out of the blue question really, something that often confuses me when I see questions or comments on the subject of prostitutes and related subjects. I do not by any means agree with prostitution, what baffles me though, is peoples attitudes towards prostitusion, as opposed to celebrity culture and Hollywood movies.

It seems that peple don't look down upon, or harshly judge celebrities that 'sell their bodies' in the sense that they're only famous for getting their kit off. Or actors and actreses that do numerous nude and sex scenes. Or people that make money in their nude roles in flms, or for having boob jobs and only being hired for a role for that reason. All these things are only a 'high class' form of prostitution. They all make money from selling their bodies.

Yet people that seem to look up or accept these people, talk of prostitutes in discust. What are other's views on this and why do you think this is?

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (28 October 2011):

person12345 agony auntI'm just going to put in my usual statistics on this:

Between 70-90% of prostituted women experienced sexual abuse prior to entering.

68% of prostituted women suffer from PTSD.

1 in 500 prostituted women are murdered.

Over 50% of prostituted women report being beaten in the past year.

Around 94% of prostituted women would leave if they could but lack the means.

So you've met one of the 6% of prostituted women who chose their profession. 94% of prostituted women would leave if they had the option to, but lack that option (financially, trafficking, threat of violence, drug dependence, blackmail etc...). The group I work with routinely works with ex-prostituted women and ex-porn actresses. Many of whom suffer PTSD from violence at the hands of johns and all of whom experienced sexual violence at some point. I don't judge women who choose that or enjoy it, but I'm not going to give that 6% of women who like it equal weight to the 94% who want out but can't.

Most celebrities did not sleep their way to the top. The people in acting who do that don't wind up celebrities because you can't base an acting career on that. You think Meryl Streep got where she is now by sleeping with producers? Where do you even get that information? Is there an official scholarly study on how many producers big actresses slept with? I haven't even heard rumors of that sort of thing, let alone anything ever confirmed. Not even once. If you can link me to something reputable maybe I'd give it a bit more weight.

You've lost me at construction workers sorry. I fully understand the circumstances of prostitution, but I don't understand how you can say that just because the celebrities you see on television have lush lifestyles, that makes it okay that in many cases they have had to sleep around to get where they are, which yes, is selling their bodies. Not all you are fed through the media is as cushy and innocent as it looks. So many people in that industry have had a violent drug abusive pasts, and it's all hushed hushed, because they have to appear respectable people.

I do not think they are the same thing, I am comparing the forms of selling ones body and how many upper class members of society are looked up to and never judged, yet they've had experiences similar to prostitution to get where they are. I am not a deluded person, like I say, it's been raised by many of people. Also, not every single prostitute gets treated in such a way, I am well well aware of the brutality in the buissness, but I also know a prostitute in person, someone whom I've known a long time. A very happy soul, who came into prostitution from her own wanting to do so, I have never been one to agree or justify prostitution, but I have never turned my back on my friend and made assumptions, she is extremely happy and content with what she does, and has never suffered any abuse at all.

I do not think, that just because celebrities live a cushy lifestyle, that what some have had to do to get that lifestyle is just dismissed, because now they have that cush lifestyle?

A female reader, shrodingerscat United States +, writes (27 October 2011):

shrodingerscat agony auntSo in your logic, everyone is a prostitute, then?

Because I don't work outside of home, and my husband does, I am his prostitute, because I sleep with him and he pays my bills, is that it? So every stay at home mom on the planet is a prostitute.

And every person that has a job is too. They are using their bodies for money, after all. So I guess everyone on the planet that has a job is a prostitute, because they're "selling their bodies" for an income.

Okay, just checking. We're all prostitutes. Gotcha.

person12345 agony auntMany prostituted women call it pay per rape. Celebrities live the most glamorous well-paid lifestyles I can think of. Anyone who thinks they are remotely the same clearly does not understand the reality of prostitution. According to you a construction worker is far more a prostitute than a celebrity, as they sell their bodies in more of the way you're talking about than an actress.

A lot of varied answers here, I guess it's all just a matter of personal views. I personally don't think it's that offensive to compare the two, many many actresses sell their bodies to get on the movie scene, to get a roll.. to 'make it'.. and not just in the sense of playing a nude or sex scene. Some are forced into sleeping with directors in order to get the part, some are forced into sleeping with the directors and are then disgarded and don't get the part. It goes on an awful lot, obviously more so than people are aware of. It's also very common for young naive women getting into acting, forced into drugs and then taken advantage of. It's not all fairytale the world of cinema, not at all, but yet we are so quick to accept what celebrities do, or what they have had to do, to get where they are today.

Now as a celebrity obsessed culture, we look up to actresses and actors and only see them through rainbow glasses. Yes they are the rich, the upper class, but they are most definatly not always well treated starting off their careers. Also, sex scenes in films and nude scenes of women are commonly put in pointlessly, just for a cheap thrill, just so viewers can enjoy a w*nk or two.

So whether it's the literal sense of having been forced into sex to get a film role, not just a role portraying sexual content, actresses can be forced into sexual deeds for a small role not even of sexual content. Or whether it's actors/actresses getting their kits off so the public can 'get off' on them, can this be considered on some level a form of prostitution? Yes, in my eyes anyway, selling your body, your naked body, for others to get sexual thrill is a form of degrading oneself, and is simply high class prostitution.

I'm not at all alone with these thoughts, it's been debated in numerous lectures I've attended throughout the years, I do not consider my opinions flawed, but you are entitled to your opinion. Thank you for the responces.

I totally agree with the asker, it is a form of prostitution. Remember money is there in all cases, pleasure, work and profession, yet two things are missing in case of non taped prostitution: (Arts) and (entertainment for the audience).

So_Very_Confused agony auntI don't look down on prostitues I feel sorry for them. they are making a living the only way they can. they are mistreated and poorly paid.

Actors... well treated.... over paid... catered to... worshiped....

can't even see a comparison.

they aren't a form of high class prostitution, beacause they are not actually having sex for money, and what they are doing is not illegal, like prostitution is in most countries. (but not all!)

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (19 October 2011):

person12345 agony auntYou're asking about a lot of very complicated issues mired in sexism and misogyny.

It's also extreme offensive to equate the two. Prostituted women have to put up with extreme levels of violence and many are raped and/or beaten, many have also suffered past abuse. Most also enter out of desperation, often as teens frequently due a lack of options. I'm unsure how this even remotely relates to celebrities who enter due to a desire to be rich and famous and live glamorous comfortable lives.

I'm disagree strongly that they both sell their bodies. As I said before, celebrities are simulating sex in a controlled environment of safety. Prostituted women are actually being penetrated, actually having to perform those acts, and being at the receiving end of aggression, hatred and violence. They are not the same.

A female reader, shrodingerscat United States +, writes (19 October 2011):

shrodingerscat agony auntBecause the actresses in those movies are not sleeping with the actor "for real". It's just ACTING. No sex involved. That's completely different than prostitution.

Selling their BEAUTY and selling their BODY are different. That is why it's acceptable to most people to watch a movie with a professional Hollywood actress in it and revile prostitution.
