A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Could anyone give me any good ideas on where to go out to eat on Valentines Day? I know it's a little early but, I'd rather plan things out than wait til the last minute to come up with something. I've been with my boyfriend since October of 2008 and him and I both know we're going to spend the rest of our lives together. I want to surprise him and take him out to dinner, I mean, I know it's supposed to be the other way around but, he's done A LOT for me. So, where is a good place to go out to eat just me and him on Valentines Day?

Fatherly Advice agony auntItalian is hard to beat for romantic atmosphere. My Brother in law who has been working in restaurants for years claims that when he was your age he would go to the restaurant before the date and check out the menu so he would know how much money to plan on. As far as romance avoid places that have televisions in the dining room, like Chili's or Wingers. Never take a date to a buffet place, even sizzlers is suspect. Of course the most intimate dining is to be had at home. If you aren't up to the cooking, many nice paces do take out.

You should probably let him know you are planning the valentines date. Then he can focus his time on a nice gift for you. Only a fool would let you do all the work and not show up with something.

This is a broad question, and we have NO IDEA where you are... tiny town in the middle of know where, or a big city with tons of choices... so, here's an idea...

Find someplace where the service is good, food excellent and it's romantic AND you feel comfortable. At your age, kids make the mistake of equating expensive with "quality" and NOTHING could be farther from the truth. Avoid the "known places" where dinner will cost well north of $100, and try to find a cozy little place in one of the hipper neighborhoods where people enjoy quality over being seen. There are multiple great website that rate restaurants. I personally like some of the Mediterranean restaurants, because they are exotic, and have great food. My favorite has two options- meat or vegetarian (we order one of each, for variety!) One price, they just start bringing little plates and you get plenty of food. Great food, good prices, something different!
