Men have to walk a very fine line. If he tells his girlfriend that he loves her to often, she'll take it for granted and lose interest without the chase. Barring that, men in touch with their feelings or willing to communicate them are considered gay. Barring even that, given an upbringing that taught them not to cry, not to show emotions, to be strong and collected, men ofter don't even know how to express themselves. Past even that, many men are just naturally more inclined to Show than Tell how they feel, buying things or doing favors or planning dates or providing or listening rather than saying "i love you"
