Basically, I meet with him once a week for an hour just to converse in English. I’m fluent in his native language as well. He’s really cute… and we’re about the same age.Since I’m going to be talking to him for an hour a week anyways, what would be good things to talk about to get to know him while still helping him with his English? What should I do?Thanks! I saw this earlier and thought that there would be more answers by now.
The first bit of advice I have is to talk only in English. It is too easy for him to slip back in to thinking in his native tongue if you constantly translate for him. Try to come up with a list of words on a single topic for each conversation. Your main goal should be to build his conversations. Talk about food one time use all of the grocery and restaurant words you can think of. Another time talk about clothes. Places around campus. Fun things to do. And walk and talk. Go places so there will be things to see and talk about.
Don't worry you will get to know him. Remember your first goal is to be helpful and provide a valuable service. the fact that he is cute is just a bonus.
