reader, anonymous, writes (11 February 2009): Just a card would do. Men are not generally materialistic when it comes to these occasions, and after all it's the thought that counts. Gina's suggestion of cooking him his favourite nosh is a good one. Candles on the table, soft lighting, romantic music in the background, that sort of thing. Seeing as it's summer where you are, flashing up the barbie with a few tinnies might not be a bad idea either.

If it's only 2 weeks in then going overboard may freak him out. Don't spend too much on an object.
It depends very much on the nature of you and him.
Would he be happy with more a little token object that's sweet and silly? This is ideal if you've been friends for ages and the whole Valentines thing seems a bit silly.
Or if you really want to make an impression on him then invite him over to yours for a meal, put candles everywhere (but be VERY careful they don't go near anything flamable and are all on plates for when they burn down) and then give him a nice back rub and well... how far you want to take that is up to you.
