What should I do about the rumours?

Question - (24 March 2010) 5 Answers - (Newest, 27 March 2010)
A female Canada age 26-29, anonymous writes:

Two of my 'friends' have been spreading rumors that I pole-dance. I swung on a pole once when I was dared to, but it was just a joke.

Now people actually believe these girls, and they think I do it for a living.... I can't take it. Soon my BF will find out about these rumors, I'll bet. He's intelligent and caring, and I know he won't believe them for a second, but I'm scared he'll see me in a different way nonetheless. Oh god, I just don't know what to do! If anyone ever brings it up, I fiercely refuse that any of it is true, but the girls who spread the rumors insist that it is, and constantly bring it up...

Please help me, I can't take it any more! What should I do? :(

Just act like it doesn't get to you- these girls who spread rumors just do so because they're bored and have nothing else to do with their free time. Unfortunately you're news until someone else becomes their next target. So in the mean time just either ignore it or just laugh it off and roll your eyes. These "friends" are truly not friends at all if this is how they act- you deserve better people in your life.

Tnx so much for the help (I'm glad you all humor me, at least).

Yup I am 13, btw, and this really happened to me.

Tnx for making me see how ridiculous these rumors are, I can't thank u all enough :)

I've already confronted the girls now, and put them in their place. Now its just a case of making some of the stupid boys in my year shut up about it (god, some of the boys I know are just SO disgusting.)

Thank u all, from

the 13 year old gal who posted the question

When I read this I just about fell off my chair laughing, this can't possibly be a question for real from a 13 year old girl.

If it is just look at them like they just grew horns on their head and walk away, no comment.

Pretty soon without a reaction from you, they will move on to someone else...they are just looking for attention, don't give in and give them any.

Carrot2000 agony auntIf anyone brings it up, remind them that you're not even old enough to pole dance. Ask them why you would need to pole dance to make a living when you have parents who support you. The key is to make people realize that this is rumor is ridiculous and that they are stupid for even thinking it might be true.

You also need to confront the girls who are spreading this rumor PUBLICLY. You know they are not your real friends,so don't worry about them not liking you after you put them on blast. If you don't put them in their place and embarrass them, they are going to keep putting this rumor out there.
