A female United Kingdom age 26-29, anonymous writes:

Me and my boyfriend have been dating almost 6 months and things have been great for us. It's my first and his first real relationship as all previous girlfriends have not really liked him. One of the many highlights to why he loves me is because I love him.

But lately he's been acting odd, we only see each over at breaks at school and on Sundays when my dad can give me a lift to his. But this weekend everything fell apart. We had decided that we were both ready for sex and were quite looking forward to it. But then the main problem rose when he said that his dad had grounded him and wouldn't let him go out with me. Me of course angry actually believed him. Until Saturday when I got a text off his cousin saying that he saw him down at the local fair with his cousin's ex and her boyfriend. I was heart-broken that he lied to me and of course texted him calling him a liar. He replied back saying that his dad let him go out and he forgot to mention it to me. So of course I believed him at that. He started having a go at me because I was angry at him and wanted the truth about how he's been acting.

He simply said that he was sick of everything, not between us but people are pissing him off, he also said he wanted space, I couldn't believe him that time and lied that I was there for him, I have lost all respect for him but still love him, he says he loves me but I just can't take his crap anymore. He won't give me a reason to why he lied so I just blanked him most of the school today, never bothered talking to me first break but at lunch he stood beside me and tried getting my attention, I however fed up with him payed not much attention to him and focused on my friends, he deserved it because never understands how much he hurts me.

My parents blame it on the steroids that he's taking for his asthma and a side effect of it is mood swings. What I ask is, could it be the steroids talking? Or is he just being a complete dick and messing me around?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (21 September 2010):

Sweetheart, why do you think "all previous girlfriends have not really liked him"? Because he's a jerk, that's why! There's no excuse for treating you the way he has. It doesn't sound like he has any better relationship with the rest of the world either. So wipe away the tears from your pretty eyes, calm your tender little heart...and forget about him!

Yeah, prescribed steroids for medical indications can cause mood problems, usually depression. Anger is more associated with overuse of anabolic steroids, the kind used for bodybuilding. So he should talk to his doctor. It's his problem, not yours.

Sweetheart, 13-15 is very young, way too young for sex. Maybe he got cold feet, maybe he realized he wasn't ready for it and he's too embarrssed to talk about that. If that's the case, good for him for calling it off. He did you a favor.

You sound like a smart, caring young lady. And your parents sound supportive, that's a blessing. I am sorry your first relationship has taken a turn like this, but use it as a learning experience. You will have many more relationships, many more ups and downs, even heartbreaks. If you concentrate on taking care of yourself, you will find the right guy who will treat you like you deserve to be treated, like a queen.

Best wishes,
