Stick with your natural colour, after all its what will suit you. If you have to go dark, get a semi permanant one before you even think about going permanant, it kills your hair.

I am a qualified hairdresser and I would advise you to go to a salon not just because of my status coz believe me I have used home hairdyes in the past.
Its a very hard combi to go from black to light brown due to the lightning needed, you need a pre-lightner to lift your hair up before you start then always get a colour lighter then you want to go (using hairdyes)
If you have red tones in your hair then your knackered get to the salon and DONT try the above as it will go wrong and you will look like ariel the little mermaid with the lightner

You want a good brand, like laureal, with a shade at least 3 times lighter than the one you want to be.
Most boxes have colour charts on the sides, so you can see roughly what colour your hair will become if you use that dye.
Take a look a various brands and shades, read the boxes first, and maybe try a 12 week wash out dye first, so if its not what you want, then you know its not perminant, experiment till you find the shade you want, then get the perminant varity.
Be warned, if you go for peroxide blonde, you will probably end up with orange hair, a mistake I have made myself lol.
though after all that, the absolute best way to lighten your hair is to do it gradually. Get a colour a few shades lighter than your own colour, then wait at least 6 weeks before you dye it again with a few shades lighter again, and repeat till you get the shade you desire. Always wait at least 6 weeks between dyes, or you will destroy your hair.
Take care xxxx
