What is causing me to have this "brewers droop?"

A male United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Ok, bit of a long winded question but I really need help so here we go...

Up until summer last year, my sex drive was perfectly normal and I frequently had erections without even thinking about it. Until that point I hadn't had much experience in intercourse but I always had the urge to do it. Then I got a girlfriend, for the first month or so everything was great, I was getting sexually excited every time she even touched my leg, and oral sex was great. But when we went to have intercourse I panicked and wasn't able to get erect. Since then we waited a few months and have managed sex 2 or 3 times but more often than not I can't achieve or maintain an erection. I don't wake up with erections any more, and don't get them for no apparant reason like I used to. I also find it hard to get erections even when I masturbate now, which is really worrying me. Does this sound like ED or does it sound like I'm thinking about it too much or something? I really don't want to be like this for the rest of my life or have to take Viagra for the rest of my life either. I'm 20 years old btw, don't drink smoke or take drugs and am fairly fit.

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (10 February 2009):

ED is often a symptom rather than a condition.

My first thought was stress as it's REALLY common for guys not to be able to perform for a girl when it's the first few times and you really care about her. You just get too nervous because it's so important.

BUT THEN you go on to say you no longer wake up with them and can't do it when alone. That is a bit more serious.

I just asked my husband who knows more about this kind of thing than me (being a man) and also he is a medic. He says that if it has suddenly just given up all hope and is refusing to play all together... then you should go and get yourself checked out by a doc. As I say, there could be something causing this that is easily fixed.

Have you done checks for lumps and bumps down there recently? Or do you have any other major stresses in your life at the moment?

Go to the doc and explain that it used to be one way and it's suddenly stopped and not just with your girlfriend, but all together. Please don't be embarrassed as this is far more common than you think and doctors deal with this all the time.

Good Luck!! xx
