My boyfriend said this too me and I was very confused as to what that expression means

It means you want it both ways. Why not ask him what he means next time? You don't have to know everything.

DenimandLace44 agony auntIt simply means you can't have everything you want. Life is a lot of give and take. It's a lot of trade-offs and sacrifices. You can't always have your way, and get what you want. Hope that clears it up for you. :)

So basically he's telling you you can't have it both ways.
