Its a term of endearment, eg like hun, sweetie, dear, chick. Dont read anythinng romantic into it coz its very unlikely that is was meant in any other way other than to be a pet name for a child/youngster that you are fond of.

3. Nautical . any of the vertical timbers bracing the bow or stern of a vessel about to be launched.
I think the 2nd definition above is what the guy meant when he used it to you.
