A reader, anonymous, writes (13 June 2008):

I'd say the average age was about 22 or 23 if it's planned. But unplanned pregnancies probably bring that average down to about 19 or 20.

A female reader, Midge United Kingdom +, writes (12 June 2008):

Midge agony auntI think each case is individual. Both my sisters had their first kid when they were 19 years old. I personally think that is too young because you have not lived, nor have you any career. But that is just a personal opinion. I am sure there are MANY who disagree with me.

I am 32 just now and my boyfriend and I are contemplating marriage in order to have a family. He has just turned 42.

I think it is more accepted that woman want kids at an older age now days, but there are a lot who want kids young.

I think so long as you have your head screwed on right, are financially stable and in a loving relationship, it doesnt matter what your age.

A reader, anonymous, writes (12 June 2008):

This is difficult and everybody's circumstances differ.

I had my first child when I was 28; career established, well settled; comfortable and looking forward to bring some "pitter patter" into our lives.

BUT as mentioned, it varies and depends on the individual; circumstances etc.

Only you will know!

Good luck and enjoy them when they are there!
