A female United States age 51-59, anonymous writes:

I'm confused about the terms in dating. What does "friends geting to know each other" mean? What does "talking" mean? what does "dating" mean? What does a relationship mean? If you go off with someone for the the weekend are you considered dating? And should you be exclusive with all of these?

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (26 February 2009):

k_c100 agony auntWell from my understanding of the american dating scene (it is very different here in the UK), the terms you mentioned mean the following:

- friends getting to know each other: this is literally how it sounds. You are getting to know that person just as you would a friend that you have just met, regardless of romantic interest. No exclusivity here, no relationship, no fututre plans etc. Just friends!

- Talking: again, take it as it is. Just speaking to someone as you would a friend. More of the getting to know you part.

- Dating: this is where things move on to the next level from being friends to being romantically involved. You will be going out on dates together e.g. out for a meal, cinema, galleries, parties etc. You are not formally boyfriend and girlfriend at this point.

- Relationship: this is again the next level on from dating. This is where you go "exclusive" as you guys say over there. You will be formally boyfriend and girlfriend, you wont be dating anyone else and you will probably be spending a bit more time together. This could then lead on to a whole host of things - love, marriage etc if it is with the right person!

Your dating system is complicated and I do feel for you! If you go for a weekend away together I would say you are dating - if you want to turn it into a relationship then normally a talk is required by the two of you where you both talk about where the relationship is going in the future. The exclusivity part only comes when you have this talk and agree to not date anyone else.

I hope this helps!
