A female reader, anonymous, writes (23 August 2011):

To answer the first question, there is nothing you can do. It's already happened. There is no need to mention it again and if she does you can sound sympathetic but keep it brief. Don't make a big fuss of it. Many women, including myself, have had some kind of menstrual mishap at least once in our lives. As embarrassing as it is, it is not life ending.

Same philosophy applies to the second question. There is nothing you can do about it since it's already happened and getting an erection is hardly (pardon the pun) unique to you. Again, no need to mention it but if it comes up (pun again sorry) then be confident and light hearted about it.

Do NOT have a serious emotional discussion about it. That will only make it worse. The more relaxed and matter of fact you are, the quicker you'll get over them. Both of you.
