He was curious to know if you liked him. The reason guys do this is when they are interested, but they don't want a rejection, if they initiate trying to interest you in them.
It usually means he lacks the confidence to just approach a girl, without qualifying her first. And that his technique is still at an immature stage. So first, such a guy seeks to establish how you feel about him. That is if you 'like' him.
If you had replied 'no' then it is likely that he would conclude he'd be wasting his time with you.
But by saying 'yes' to him, he then gets
the message that if he approaches/contacts you again, that you are unlikely to reject him. So then he feels more able to contact you again.
If he contacts you again make sure he speaks to you and treats you respectfully. Always take particular notice to look at the ACTIONS of a guy, not his words. His actions demonstrate his character and how genuine and trustworthy he is.
