What can I expect from my first appointment with the midwife? No scan yet but I confirmed I am pregnant. Not sure how many weeks yet.

I have just found out I am pregnant...although I could be anywhere up to 24 weeks pregnant already. I would rather not go into detail about why I have only just found out now but a chat with a midwife over the phone confirmed that in my position this is very possible.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone has been in the same position.

Tomorrow is my first appointment with a midwife...I only found out 3 days ago about the pregnancy so have not seen anyone about it yet.

What will I expect at this appointment?

Will I get a scan there and then to confirm if I am so far along...or will the midwife just feel my stomach...listen for a heart beat etc and book a scan for a different day.

I expect it will be different from general first appointments for pregnant women because of the suspicion of me already being so far along.

Has anyone got advice? Anyone been in same position? What can I expect tomorrow?

Not all midwives are trained to use the ultra-sound scanner so you may or may not have your scan done at the same time. They may simply book you in for a scan appointment after your ante-natal exam.

For pelvic (uterine) scans you generally need to have a full bladder but don't arrive at the scan with a completely full bladder or you may find yourself having to wait and spend time in a waiting room feeling very uncomfortable! If you need a full bladder, they will provide you with water to drink while you're waiting.

If you really are 24 weeks pregnant, it may be a little bit tricky to accurately date your pregnancy and give you an accurate due date (if you've continued to be sexually actice during that time, you might have concieved later than you thought). Having said that, most babies I know never arrive on their given due date anyway

The midwife will probably feel your stomach, listen to your heart rate and the baby's, check your blood pressure and give you an internal examination to check your cervix.

They will take blood from you to check your iron levels and blood sugar levels.

Mainly they will ask you lots of questions about your medical history and lifetsyle. They will ask you whether certain illnesses run in you or the father's family. They will want to know how much you smoked and drank before you discovered you were pregnant and whether you did anything else that might have put the developing baby at risk e.g. recreational drug use, casual unprotected sex, exposure to X-rays, prescribed medicatons etc. It's important to answer these questions truthfully and not feel embarrassed or insulted that you've been asked. They ask everybody this

To be perfectly honest, I can't really see how the appointment would vary much from a planned pregnancy except things will be done in a different order.

Good luck
