You said for the past year and a half. For a 22 year old to say he is tired something is up. There is a very small possibility that he is stressed out or he has a medical problem but I doubt it. Rather than digging into him, asking questions, like are you losing interest in me and suffering humiliation later, why don't you tell him face to face that you are aware about the distance between you and him and if things are not right it's okay to talk, or break things off.
