A reader, anonymous, writes (15 September 2010):

So, she has been with you since she was 14, and now she's off to college. It sucks, but it's awful hard to meet and stay with one person since childhood. She probably needs room to grow and discover who she is as a person, as an individual. You should do the same - no matter how hard it hurts. Stay cool and friendly to her, but don't be her weekend F buddy. Let he have her clean break, and the two of you go out into the world. Stay in touch, but as friends only. One day, years from now, the two of you may find each other again. If you look through this board, you will see how difficult it is for people to let go of their first love - especially women.

So man up. Go out and experience the world a bit. Stay in touch with her, always be nice, but from a distance. Then, in a few years when she has had a chance to see what other guys are like, maybe you two will find each other again...
