I’m so confused on what to do. Okay, I have been together with this guy for over two years. We are ten years apart (I’m 22 and he is 32). We just got engaged when he moved 1,400 miles away from me. I don’t think I am ready to marry him. I am having doubts about wanting to be with him. I don’t want to hurt him but I don’t feel like we connect anymore. Everything about him lately is really getting on my nerves. If I decide not to be with him I don’t know how to tell him. I don’t want to hurt him. Please help.

A female reader, hunnibear +, writes (5 December 2005):

You never do anyone any favors when you decide to stay with them longer than you really want to... the sooner you set him free the better off he is. Even if you think breaking things off is hurting him, it's like a taking off a bandaid - a slow, painful pull is even more awful than just tearing it off all at once. Once you decide you don't want to be with this guy, do you both a favor and get the breakup over with.
