A female United Kingdom, anonymous writes:

This Saturday, I had sex for the first time (It's Thursday now over here). My boyfriend and I are both virgins, and we used the Durex Extra Safe condoms which, as far as I know have spermicide included. We took extra care to make sure the condom didn't break or split, and afterwards, he took it off well away from me. And I know there's very little chance of pregnancy. Yet still I worry...

My period's due next week sometime, and the wait is killing me.

Am I worrying unneccessarily? And what are the odds of me becoming pregnant, judging by what I've said above?

I just really need reassurance on this, I'm so stressed out about this.

Bev Conolly agony auntIf the condom didn't split or slip off, then it's really unlikely. Try not to worry.

To relieve yourself of this sort of stress in future, consider getting yourself a backup method, or go get yourself on the pill, if possible.

Don't worry! I was exactly the same when it was my first time and the times after that - I was always worried that I could get pregnant and waiting for my next period was awful, but it always did. Becuase pregnancy is such a fear, sometimes ur mind can go overdrive, just remember you are using really safe condoms, and as long as they dont split or anything, you'll be okay. I was once really paranoid that I was pregnant when my period was late i took a pregnany test, even tho the condom had not split or anything. Everything was fine, and then I got my period, but then periods can go a bit irregular after you start having sex. Dont worry!

A female reader, xxxsoulsistaxxx United Kingdom +, writes (27 July 2006):

xxxsoulsistaxxx agony auntIt's highly unlikely you can be pregnant if the condom was used properly. Obviously nothing is 100% when we're talking contraception but, trust me, you're not pregnant. You were very sensible to be so careful.

However, I do think this worrying you're doing shows me you're really not ready to be having sex just yet. Sometimes, our subconscious makes us worry about one thing when really, deep down ,we're actually worried about something completely different. You know you can't really be pregnant, don't you? Maybe these feelings are trying to mask the worries you have about the whole experience?

I might be way off here but you need to consider whether you are ready for this yet. There's no age when you have to start having sex and if you're not ready, you can wait. If the guy is worth it, he will wait for you to be ready. I hope this has helped and not just confused you more! You're not pregnany, honey, but please try thinking about whether this is right for you.

Please get in contact with me if you would like to ask anything or just chat. Good luck
