We have a son but I no longer love him...I feel stuck!

A female , anonymous writes:

I dont know what to do. I am not longer in love with my partner. We have a 3 year old son together. I haven't cheated or anything like that but I am definitely finding myself attracted to other people. We had our son very early in our relationship and have no help at all from friends or family. I find myself resentful of feeling trapped. We are both university students and I am financially dependant on my partner. I dont know whether I should stick it out and work on becoming happy together or just accept that 3 years of unhappiness will not get better with more time? He's a great guy and I dont want to muck everything up.

A female reader, Mirabell +, writes (7 December 2005):

Mirabell agony auntHave you told him you feel stressed? If you are truly not in love with him you should leave, of course. There is no reason to stay and be miserable. Your son is very young and if you try you can make this separation very easy on him.

Before you make what may very well be a big mistake you should really question whether this is the stress talking. Try to relieve the pressure by taking out another loan or moving somewhere cheaper. Try taking one class fewer a semester. If you really want to, you can get through this.
