A reader, anonymous, writes (26 January 2011):

In a certain way, it doesn't matter if it's true or not. What matters is how he treats you and feels about you when he's sober. In this case he is putting you off.

When drunk some men can either be incredibly honest or excellent liars. Is he a lot older than you?

He could have said "I love you" just to manipulate your feelings. He could have said that because he figured you would take it very seriously and you might put out? (Did he say this before or after sex?) Because he appears to be cheating (at least emotionally) on his new "girlfriend," I would guess this is the reason he said what he did.

Equally, he could be trying very hard to make a clean break from you, but has ambivalent emotions he is trying to get over. When he's drunk, he feels weak and so he says "I love you."

I think you should forget this guy. There are better out there.
