I have been on birth control for about 6 to 7 months. Never in my life have I had a problem with my discharge but within the last maybe 3 to 4 months Ive had variations with my discharge and my main concern is the way it tastes. It's affecting my oral sex life with my boyfriend because I dont know if it bothers him because he tastes it and it makes me unconfortable. The taste is a bitter and kind of sour taste. The kind of birth control Ive been taking is NuvaRing, and he says it never used to taste like anything before. I've noticed that the discharge changes to normal clear and slippery with no odor or taste right after we've had sex so I suggested maybe we try doing it after that but havent gotten to it yet. Is there any way this could be a side effect this certain birth control is having on my body...diet issues, even though they've never changed, things to eat to taste better..cleaning myself out?

Please Help!! thank you

ps. Ive been tested for std's and im negative.

I wonder what Nuvaring is? If it in an internal device you need to be checked out - I mean a coil of some kind. They can become infected, which can affect fertility.

Otherwise (I am aways recommending this!) get some grapefruit seed extract from a health food shop and dilute it as intructed. Put it in a squeezy bottle and have a good douche with it. It is harmless, you can even drink it, but it immobilises bacteria. It will not strip you, look it up on line for all the uses. Everyone I know who uses it never has that female taste/odour problem. now. I would not using it at all when trying to be, or being pregnant though.

mcbirdie agony auntChanges in your discharge are normal and they seem to happen more when you are quite young (just before and during puberty) and again when your biological clock starts to...well, kick into overdrive. You may find that there is a cyclical pattern to the changes--I know that my discharge is different during the period that I am ovulating versus other times.

If your discharge is still clear, yet has a slightly more sour taste, it is more likely that you are simply ovulating or that there is a slight bacterial imbalance (these are nothing to worry about and happen quite normally--without other problems, your body will correct itself). If your discharge is sour and cloudy, it is even more likely to be a bacterial imbalance. It may be worth talking to your doctor about doing a quick smear test to check for this. Most likely, though, it is nothing for you to worry about. I would bet that the taste is hardly noticeable to your boyfriend--we tend to be much more conscious of changes than men are.

However, if your discharge turns yellow or greyish, or is lumpy in texture, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. It is possible to have an infection (even when you are clear of STDs)--these are usually very simple to clear up, but if left untreated can be a misery. This is especially true if you're finding that you're experiencing any burning or itching.

Otherwise, yes, you can affect your taste slightly by your diet. Make sure that you're eating yogurt, which will help prevent or treat any yeast imbalances. Eating more beta-carotene may also help--these are usually orange foods like sweet potatoes, carrots, and apricots. Avoid foods that are high in sugar, including alcohol. I find that eating cranberry based foods, or drinking cranberry juice, helps to keep my urinary tract/bladder healthy, which helps.

Good luck. :)
