A female reader, oiais United States +, writes (23 March 2009):

Woman can get Vaginal infections a lot of ways. Yes it is possible by Oral or fingering but it would not be the direct cause of the infection.

Always make sure your fingernails are cut short and your hands are clean to prevent any bacteria from your hands entering the vagina. If your nails have a length to them, they can cut or scrape the inside of the vagina and an infection can occur.

There is not a vary high risk of a serious bacterial infection, but just be smart and clean and you should be fine.

Hope that helps
