Tisha-1 agony auntI love this video. I learned a lot from it and it might explain things a lot better than me typing out this sentence: the fertilized egg has to implant in the uterus before any hormones that signal pregnancy are released and therefore can be detected. There are many factors that can affect that timing.

Olivia(Y). agony auntPeriods can be late all the time for different reason.

Stress is one of them. If you are having a hard time at work or if you are worried that you are pregnant this can delay your period.

Some woman find that their periods only settle down into a regular cycle after they have had a child so don't worry if you are late or early now and again.

If your period still hasn't come in a week get a test.

Do one and then wait 48 hours then do another one to see if you get the same results. If it comes back positive go and see your doctor for options and to find out how far gone you are.

Good luck sweetie

A female reader, Fee-Fee United Kingdom +, writes (16 March 2009):

Fee-Fee agony auntIt depends on when you think you conceived.

It takes around 2 weeks for your body to start producing enough hormones to make a difference, and it is these hormones a pregnancy test detects. Although there are some tests which claim they can test next day ... personally, I am not convinced.

I'd wait for a week or so, then take a test. If you can't wait that long, then go and see your doctor - a blood test from them will detect it earlier than a shop bought test.

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (16 March 2009):

You can get tests that will come up this early, but to be honest you are only a couple of days late so if you do not have reason to suspect you are pregnant it could be nothing.

Good Luck!! xx
