A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

i've liked my best friend for about a year now and last night we all went out. I realised i left my phone in the car so my friend lets call him mike and i went to the car.

On the way he randomly mentioned a text that i sent him years ago telling him that i liked him. I was a little taken back and embarrassed. he is one of them guys that never talk bout their feelings. he's not shy but doesnt seem to have a emotional side. He then dropped my other friend off first in the car ( he never does this, this means he doubles the trip to get home for himself) afeter all this i was like hmm ok.

so we was outside my house chattin for ages and every time i went to get out of the car he changed the subject and we started chatting again.

Well yes i had had some alcohol so i wasnt holding back with wat i shud of been sayin. Well anyway i was at home and i was chatting to him on IM/MSN and i told him i had like him for ages and that i knew he knew it. and he replied GUTTED!

i just dont no how to speak to him now he is one of my best friends and to reply GUTTED i am so not impressed.

should i explain i am hurt or just carry on as normal wiv him and act like nothings happened?

I would be hurt.

That is not exactly a nice reply. He may not have meant it in that way but let him explain that to you if not.

Just don't talk with him for a while and if he comes after you to check things are ok then you can tell him "It's not nice to be told someone is gutted about you liking them."

I wonder why you didn't ask him what he meant as soon as he said it? I would have probably replied "well sorry you are gutted. I'll leave you alone then." and signed off.

Good Luck!! xx

A reader, anonymous, writes (29 March 2009):

for international readers - gutted means normally that you are really upset . e.g. i am gutted my football team didnt win.

So in this context it could mean he is gutted by the message or gutted because he has just got with someone else?

just speak to him normally - revert to friendship mode it will be better then you can understand what gutted in this terms means...
