When you say "had a fling with" do you mean she cheated on you, or do you mean he's just a bit of an Ex from before she was with you?
If she cheated on you, then it's no wonder you are uptight, you are clearly having trust issues. Talk to her about it and tell he what she can do to reassure you - like not talking to other guys when you aren't there at the ball.
If this is just an Ex, then sweetheart, get over it! You can't expect an 18 - 21 yearold girl to have never been kissed. She is with you now. So the best thing to do is go to the ball with your shoulders back and your head held high, looking fabulous. Then all night be really romantic, dance with her, kiss her, let your hands wander. After all, she is going to be in a gorgeous dress, so your mind should be on her all night.
This other guy should see you and be jealous. Not the other way round, he lost her. He's the loser.

 okay, don't worry about your girlfriend becuase if shes silly enough to walk off and go with some other guy then no offence she may not be worth the worry :S.
keep yourself distracted...and is this ball like a prom?
and if she won't tell you..then don't pressure her too try and take your mind off it
