It is put into your upper arm (well, your gf's) generally on the arm that she doesnt write with. It is inserted using a local anesthetic, that hurts slightly but the inserting of the implant doesnt hurt at all.
Your gf doesnt have to tell her mum and the doctor cannot tell her either.
You do not have to wear a condom but remember that no contraception is 100% effective and it might be worthwhile having the "what if" talk.
It is also worth noting that people experience different side effects.
I have had no periods and no libido tbh!
My friend has had a non-stop period for about 3 months since she went on it and had to go to the doctors for a new pill to take with the implant to stop the bleeding.
Another friend gained 3 stone on it!

They normally put the implant in her upper arm. Her mom might notice the scar. You should talk to your doctor about alternative places you can place it. Most places do not require a 16 year old to get parental consent for contraception.
If you are both clean of STDs you do not need to wear a condom. You can ejaculate inside her.
A hormonal contraceptive has a lower failure rate than a condom, so I can't imagine anyone telling you you're being irresponsible.
Before you ditch the condoms though (as opposed to using both condoms and the implant), it's important you both discuss what you would do if it failed and she became pregnant. While the implant is even more effective than the pill because there is no error in taking it, it is not 100% effective (it's around 99.8%). I'd say you might want to use both, or the implant plus a spermicide (they make them in convenient little sheets) if she's not comfortable with an abortion.
