 Girls are people too, not aliens from another planet.
As jmpirie said, don't dwell so much on the outcome. As I had posted on another question, start out as if you are already acquainted and ask "How has your day been?" Those girls who are nice will tell you about their day. Those who are not are not worth knowing.
You have been socialized to see girls as something other than what you are. When view from the lens of friendship, they are no different from you. And your perceptions of difference are the source of your nervousness.

 Somehow you have to find a way to stop caring about the outcome. Talk to a girl because you want to meet a new person and not because you want her phone number.
Start off small by engaging in short two to five minute conversations. If you start to get nervous, feel that you are running out of material or are sensing the onset of the dreaded silence just express your pleasure in having met her, excuse yourself and go somewhere with confidence. Since you were not after her phone number you did not fail.

 I used to get really nervous rould boys when I was at school. I still do now round people who I don't know too well.
The only thing I can really say is bite the bullet and chat to a girl you like. Just start off saying hey and asking her how she is and stuff.
If she likes you she will "watch" you almost like staring at you. Will go shy around you. Flirt with you or there are a million other little signs.
