I think I do find out most of the times.. but I usually give the person the benefit of the doubt and end up having to go through a tough episode..

 I'm going to answer this question as a woman in a happy relationship that is going on two and a half years now.
My boyfriend was not like all the other guys I've dated. The first signs were simple; He opened doors for me, he payed for our dates, and he was generally interested in what I had to say. Those things showed me that he was a gentlemen and respectful. The little things are what will prove to you he really loves you in the long run. Such as remembering important dates (birthdays/anniversaries), taking care of you when you're sick, etc. You will know when a man loves you because he will not just tell you, but he will prove it to you every day.
