Shouldn't she be washing her hands after using the toilet? Do I ask her about this?

I recently noticed that a relative of mine has stopped washing her hands after she poops. (Thin bathroom door and I can hear her flush after being in there for a long time and then she immediately comes out.)

I know she hates hand sanitizer so I'm sure she's not using that. She does have eczema, so I know she would rather not wash her hands more than necessary.

She's an adult so I worry that asking her about it will offend her, on the other hand, isn't this a bad thing to skip?

aunt honesty agony auntHonestly I don't think you should talk to her about it, more than likely it will offend her and yes she is an adult so I am sure she knows how to look after herself. If you share a house with her then bring up the flu and all the germs and say that you have bought some new products to stop the spreading of germs and then leave it at that.

Oh, I do recall there are also wipes you can use to sanitize the hands. Place them on top of the toilet in plain view!

You can pass all sorts of viruses, infections, and flues around by not washing your hands! Eczema is not a reason for people not to wash their hands! The reason is simply laziness and poor hygiene habits.

I would be quite concerned about her touching door handles, messing around your kitchen, or handling food, or even holding her hand. It's nasty!

In your house, your rules. Yes, she is an adult. More reason to know better.

Get an ultra-mild organic soap or milder hand-sanitizer; that specifies on the label that it is mild, hyper-allergenic, and can be used on sensitive-skin. I have both in all my bathrooms! Even her doctor can provide her a prescription for a lotion to soothe skin-irritation from washing. There is no excuse!!!

Until you can provide special accommodations; ask her to wash her hands! You can be nice about it, you don't have to scold her like a child. People do sometimes make themselves too much at-home!

You may have rationalized to yourself it's due to her skin condition, to avoid embarrassing her. It's just bad hygiene and very unclean!

Honeypie agony auntWith the flu season being as dangerous as it is... NOT washing her hands is BAD. They estimate that the flu vaccine this year is only 10% useful.

I get that eczema might make hand washing more painful, but it beats getting ill from the germs or other viral bacteria going around.

Do you share kitchen with her? Bathroom? Other rooms? If so, I'd talk about the bad flue going around and what the CDC recommend - WASHING your hand A LOT.

I wouldn't immediately bring up.. I hear you don't wash your hands. I would try with the CDC advice first and see what happens.

I CAN NOT imagine sharing a house with someone who doesn't wash their hands after using the rest room. Doesn't matter if they go #1 or 2. DO NO CARE- WASH you hand!

The more water there is in a lotion or moisturizer, the more likely it is to worsen your hand eczema.

Thus, I would go buy some petroleum jelly or a eczema specific lotion and put it in the bathroom. NOT washing her hands is NOT good.
