A age 30-35, * writes:

My boyfriend wants to be a writer when he finishes high school. He gave me a few pages to read and it was horrible. I let some of my friends read it too (without him knowing) and agree with me. He wants to know what I think, I just don't have the heart to him. Should I tell him the truth?

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (29 September 2008):

Refer him to internet sites like livejournal.com where they have review communities.

In the mean time you will have to say something about how you feel about it.

Find one good thing about it. Is there a strong character, original plot line, does he have good style? Tell him this first

Then tell him the biggest problem with it but don't say "it's crap" tell him what you think he needs to improve to make it better.

After that just tell him where he can go to get proper reviews and constructive criticism.

Don't worry too much, everyone writes crap while at school. I look back on the stuff I thought was brilliant at the time and cringe. He'll need to go off and study literature and read as many books as he can and develop his own style.

Find out about creative writing courses in your area.

Good Luck!! xx

TELLULAH agony auntHi Maggi,

Perhaps you should just say, that you are not really qualified to give an opinion. And that maybe he should ask one of his teachers instead. Even though you didnt like what he had written, it could be that the subject wasnt to you or your friends taste. After all! if we all liked the same things what kind of world would we live in.
