A male United States age 26-29, anonymous writes:

Hey guys. I'm having some issues I guess you can say. I've fallen in love with my friend. But as the scenario is. She told me she loves me and would go out with me but she says there is an age difference and it would be weird. I know this for a fact but my phylosophy is age is just a number. And shouldn't dictate over any kind of emotional way. Can you guys help? I've tried giving up but letting go is worse than the situation. Can I have some legit advice? For your guys info she is 3 years older than me (yes I do see the age difference but I don't see it as a border)

Thanks

It's illegal to go out with someone and engage in any sexual contact when you're a minor and they're an adult. It might seem easy enough but you're emotions and hormone will get the better of you and she could go to jail and be a registered sex offender. I made the same mistake with my husband. im 23 and we have a child and one on the way but we slept together 2 days before my eighteenth birthday. He got bail but he is a permanent sex offender. Which means whenever i throw a birthday party for my daughter noone really comes as other parents know about my husband. ALso social workers are wwekly visitor checking up on his progress and they will become daily as i am expecting a little girl. so wait.

A female reader, YouWish United States +, writes (28 January 2011):

YouWish agony auntWell, if you were both in your twenties, 3 years is nothing. However, if you're 13, then she's 16. If you're 15, then she's 18? If she turned 18 and you're 15, there are some serious legal problems with her dating you. If you were to have sex, she could be convicted of statutory rape.

Age may be a number to you emotionally, but until both of you are 18) with that kind of age difference, then the laws of the state would contradict that sentiment.

If you are in love with her, waiting is your prescription. Be friends for now and hopefully down the line when you're both adults, you can get the ball rolling.
