Problem with the former is that the man cannot see his lover's face when he's pleasuring her - though my current girlfriend prefers this approach. Thanks.

Presuming you know that there is much more about a good session of cunnilingus than licking the clitoral hood . . . well, I think that we should delineate the parts here. The clitoral hood is the fleshy covering that protects the clitoral glans and shaft itself. It is more or less a wishbone-shaped fold of skin tissue that intersects just above the glans (button or bud). While it is indeed an auxiliary part of the clitoris, it is hardly the focal point for stimulation.
Ultimately, the clitoral glans is the specific focal point of stimulation, but only after it is "ready" for direct activity. The glans (or bud) corresponds with the head of a penis in males, and contains probably 75 percent of the sensitive nerve endings in a woman's special area. Direct stimulation upon the glans, either by tongue, fingers or otherwise is most comfortably (for her) performed during the very late stage of arousal - usually just before and during her orgasm.
In fact, the clitoral shaft and bud usually retract into the 'hood" to some degree at this point. My technique is to use the thumb and index finger of my left hand to part the clitoral hood, which helps gain access to the glans.
Once that point has been reached, up, down, circular and other motions with the tongue are all likely to stimulate. I've always found that using the tongue as flat pressure upon her clitoris as she begins orgasm is most effective. As she orgasms, I apply the this tongue pressure firmly without movement, After orgasm, at least momentarily, it is best to discontinue stimulation. After a moment, she may want you to resume with more variety - which may lead to multiple orgasms.
But there is much more technique prior to the point that direct stimulation of the clitoris should be applied to most women. Too much too soon may be irritating or too sensitive for many. I think that you might gain by reading more of my suggestions in this Web site's archives. Just enter the word "cunnilingus" in the search field.
