But i have now started going out in town again and keep running into him and hearing rumours of him with other girls...this has just opened a nearly healed wound and has made me feel like i did when we first broke up. I dont know what to do...either stop going out with my friends and not see him or still go out with my friends, and not get over him!

These things just take time hun, you can't stop yourself from bumping into him, especially if you see him around a lot where you live and things like that.
Things DO get easier with time, i know it dosen't seem like that now but honestly it does.
Don't stop going out with friends because of this guy. Continue to enjoy yourself with friends and you'll start to forget about him. Yes, when you do see him again, of course it's going to bring back memories again, but just think to yourself "I'm not gonna let this get to me" and if people come to you telling you things about him, simply tell them that it's over between you and him and you really don't want to know about him anymore.
Just try to be strong for yourself hun, don't let it get you down. Your friends, i am sure will give you support and help you through this difficult time. There's no such thing as a bad breakup, it's never easy.
Stay strong, take care
