I've only ever done this once. It was an event I'd known my ex would be at for a few months in advance, I couldn't get out of going to it and I knew that it would be mostly his friends and family (who he had badmouted me to) so I was pretty terrified.
I wore a fitted strappy black satin dress, mid thigh length. Black satin heels, and brought my partner at the time.
The outfit, the partner and having a few close friends there to drink heartily and dance, dance, dance with made it a very enjoyable night.
Dress in an outfit that makes you feel you look your best, try not to look as though you're trying TOO hard and ensure that your company for the night will have you focusing more on enjoying yourself than gauging your ex's reaction.
