Is this a really realible way of birth control? Is there any other forms of protection (apart from of course abstinance) which we could use to improve our level of birth control alongside condoms and the pill?Oh and , if I take the pill at pretty much the same time every day and I've been taking it for a while , if we didn't use a condom once whilst having sex (which is pretty unlikely) am I still reasonably protected from getting pregnant?

It's worked for me since I was eighteen, so it should work for you :) Seriously though, you're playing as safe as is possible, short of abstinence.

Read and learn as much as you can besides the minimal breakdown of knowledge the doctors give you. Go online..ask girlfriends, etc. You'll be surprised why it doesn't work at times, and why so many get pregnant while on it, even when it's potential protection is 99 percent. It's great that you're using condoms as well, for that reason, since no form of protection is perfect. Yes, it can get costly over the years and it doesn't feel the same as sex without a condom, but it's worth it if you're serious about not wanting a child for awhile. Unless your boyfriend poked a pin-sized hole through the wrapper into the condom(which some guys secretly do to try to keep a girl with them alot longer than the girl expected to be, you're very safe with condoms as a second layer of defense, which will only become unsafe when used wrong or broken at all. Keep using both, and you can't go wrong.

But is almost perfect on pregnancy. Condoms aren't 100% on sexually transmitted diseases either, though. But if you both lost your virginity's to eachother, than you should be fine!

Make sure that the technique u are using to put the condom on and take it off are correct. Also it is important to not miss a pill and take it correctly (there are diff types of pill so ask ur dr bout ur specific one if your unsure). You may be protected if u dont use your a condom once, but u are still taking a risk. Also remember the pill will not protect u from STI's! Finally if u feel u are finding it difficult to remember to take your pill u could try the mirena coil or the depo injection....ask ur dr. Hope this helps.

Short of not having sex, you're using the most reliable method of all, which is to be on the pill and use condoms. Even if you didn't use a condom (and keep on using them by the way!), there would only be about a 98% chance that you'd get pregnant if you were still on the pill (It's not perfect, but nearly is). You're using the best protection possible, so keep up with the maturity :).

reader, anonymous, writes (16 July 2010): The only reason people use condoms whilst being on the pill is simply because it's protecting them from STI'S. I personally think being on the pill AND using a condom is silly, it's way too much to the extreme.I've never used a condom whilst being on the pill and it's been fine, which is the reason you take them. It's called 'birth control' for a reason. Yes we all know the pill isn't 100% protected but it's a VERY slim chance. However, there's no need to wear condoms also. If you're worried, just use the 'pull out' method instead of going through the effort of getting/buying condoms as well.
