In general, you serve near where you live and work one weekend per month plus two weeks per year. For certain types of jobs this is not true, but they will not force you into those situations. (You would have to volunteer for that and even then they pay to fly you out once per month.) Yes, people with regular day jobs are in the reserves. It is possible to be called up to full-time duty and be deployed, however.

Call a recruiter and ask, it may vary from branch to branch.
Being in the Reserve means you can get called up for duty, such as... deployments.
