Ok, so ive just have the contraceptive implant or "the rod" put in. My question is do you have to wait until after your period before having unprotected sex? or can i just wait for a week? (the time it takes for the implant to kick in)

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (27 June 2009):

Tisha-1 agony aunt"If you get the implant during the first five days of your period, you are protected against pregnancy immediately. Otherwise, you need to use some form of backup birth control — like a condom, female condom, diaphragm, sponge, or emergency contraception (morning after pill) — for the first week after getting the implant."

Your doctor should have gone over this with you, and you should have the information sheets on the implant for your own perusal.

I got the first paragraph from: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/birth-control-implant-implanon-4243.htm

Keep in mind that the implant does nothing to protect you from sexually transmitted infections, and that no form of birth control, except abstinence, is 100% effective. They are VERY effective, but not perfect. So if you use a condom as well as the implant, you theoretically lower your risk to almost negligible.

File this away for your own knowledge. And if you click on the pictures, it will go into more depth: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control//birth-control-effectiveness-chart-22710.htm

Good luck!
