Possibly miscarriage?

Question - (8 September 2009) 2 Answers - (Newest, 8 September 2009)
A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

So I've been on the pill for 3.5 months now and have regular sex without a condom. Last month, about a week and a half before my scheduled period I started spotting heavily, like almost a full on period for the full week and a half. I had skipped my period by skipping the sugar pills and starting the next pack the month before because I had an event. Then when I got to the sugar pills for seven days, the amount of bleeding got strange. It got extremely heavy for a day, heavier than my period has ever been, and then a large, thing, came out. It wasn't a clot, there was some clear/gray/pinkish actual tissue in it. It was about 2 inches by 1 inch. After that, I barely spotted, and the period was just over long before it should have been. I was concerned it was a miscarriage despite my pill use, but didn't go to a doctor. It's been bothering me though, not knowing what happened. Is it possible that now, a month later, a doc could tell me? Is it possible that that's what happened?

I had severe cramping for the 1.5 weeks I spotted and I gained some weight, mood swings too. But I'm not sure, nothing that stood out to me as PREGNANT. But see, I was still on the pill, so that causes symptoms like pregnancy.

I don't think that really any of us can answer you for certain, but I know when you continue your active pills instead of the sugar pills for that week, it can make your period become very irregular for a while. As far as what came out...perhaps it was just some tissue from your uterus? I've never had a miscarriage, but from what I've heard from others that have, besides heavy bleeding, there's usually severe cramping. Did you have any cramping or any signs of pregnancy before all of this occurred?
