It's like he has a literal mind of his own... Any Ideas as to what might be the problem?

They really aren't very dependable pieces of equipment, at least not after you're 15.
In my experience, some of it is physical -- if you're tired or stressed, for example, it can easily affect the quality of an erection. Alcohol doesn't generally help, either.
The mental side is huge, too. I experienced complete and abject failure for a period of several weeks when I knew the girl was waaay more into me. She was ready to go on the first date, saying she loved me; knowing she was a virgin, my conscience wasn't going to let anything happen until I could plausibly feel I loved her back. That's an extreme example, but so much of sex is mental, and if your subconscious has a reservation for some reason, things aren't going to work as well as they might.
