A few questions about sex related stuff....

1. Can you still catch and STD if you use a condom? I know if the condom breaks you could get pregnant, so does that mean an STD too?

2. When are you suppose to have a PAP Smear? Im very confused about this. I turned 18 in August and had sex for the first time in Dec. So does that mean that I wait for two years after I turned 18 or two years after the first time I had sex, to have my pap smear?

3. Also does having a pap smear hurt/just feel weird?

Thanks for answering.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (16 January 2008):

1. Most condoms are very effective, when used correctly, against the AIDS virus, but not 100% effective against other types of STDs. If a condom breaks, then yes, there is a chance of contracting an STD just as there is a chance of pregnancy.

2. PAP smears should be done within three years of you having sex or by the time you're 21...whichever comes first. Since you're already sexually active, you should schedule a visit to your gynecologist for a PAP smear.

3. PAP smears don't hurt. They may feel odd the first time you get one only b/c it's a new experience. If you do experience any pain during a PAP smear, tell your doctor right then and there b/c it may mean a different issue is going on.

Since you're 18, it's recommended that you start seeing your gynecologist yearly. He or she will be able to answer many of these questions for you in great detail Remember: it's important to ask professionals these questions since you are dealing with your health and well-being.
