writes: Can a woman with oral herpes have unprotected sex without giving it to her mate? Because you know oral herpes effects the lips and eyes and genital herpes effects the genitals. So if there is oral herpes is it all right to have unprotected sex without passing it on?

reader, anonymous, writes (28 October 2008): i am presuming you mean herpes simplex virus causing cold sores? oral herpes can be passed onto the genitals through oral sex, but it cannot be passed on without any contact from the mouth. therefore unprotected sex is very unlikely to spread the oral herpes, though it makes you and your partner vulnerable to a whole range of other diseases if you are not careful! unless you can be certain that both you and your partner are clean then it is not a good idea to engage in sex without a condom.
