A female reader, Variety United Kingdom +, writes (30 January 2008):

Variety agony auntWhy don't you mention to her that a couple of guys will be meeting you two at the cinema. Don't go so far as to say it is a date, but rather that you are going as a group of friends. You shouldn't lie to your Mum because otherwise she won't trust you. But I think if you just didn't mention the fact that the person you are meeting is your boyfriend it would be ok. x

A reader, anonymous, writes (30 January 2008):

I don't think at your age you could say that you really love each other, but hey, I'm not going to judge.

You shouldn't really have lied to your mom, but I can totally understand why you did - I mean, I've been in pretty much the same situation. Just work something out, your boyfriend could meet you down at the cinemas, just inside the doors, so when you arrive your parents won't see him or anything. Then go buy your tickets, and have a good time! But be careful, it's not safe to lie to your mom. A better idea might be to sit down, tell her why you want to go, and I'm sure she'll let you. She was your age once, and it IS valentine's day after all.

I hope it works out for you.
