hi there, I have the Yasmin birth control but have not starting taking it yet. I am going away and unfourtunately I am going to get my period at the beginning of myholiday. A few female friends have told me that if i start taking the pill about 4 days before my vacation it will suppress the period and then when I get home I stop with the pills and will get my period, and then can begin the pills properly. does anybody know if this is true? my friends also said that by using the pill that way it will not protect against pregnancy, but if ihave no had the period, then i wouldnt be ovulating, so would it not still work? so many quesitons i know just a little unsure and definently dont want me red friend visiting while on my holiday.

I'm on yasmin, and if you're already taking it, when you finish the pack, start a new pack without a break. This will delay your period to when you want it to be.

Pretty easy really. But depending on how heavy or light your periods are sometimes you can get spots of blood.

Have a good hol :)

Wendyg agony auntYasmin is a new combined pill, but it comes in two different types a 21 day and a 28 day cycle, which means that 21 pills are taken and then 7 free days and then on the 28 one you take it for 28 and the 7 days are inactive pills in aid to help you remember. When first taking the pill you are supposed to start taking it on day one of your period, and then carry on as directed. Ordinarily with other combined pills that i have taken in the past, on the 7 pill free days i have carried on taking the pill and it has delayed my period, but that was first by taking it on the first day of my period, and im not sure if the Yasmin is the same. Also taking it before you are due to come on might mess up the whole cycle i dont know as everyone is different and im not sure how this will work with your cycle, it could delay it, it could bring you on, it could give you intermitant bleeding, we all vary so its hard to say. Im not sure that taking it before your period will stop it or not and im not sure how protected you would be, all i know is that from day one of your period on the ordinary combined pill if your took your pill you were covered. I have looked on line and this is the only really useful site i can find. If in doubt always ask your health consultant, and there may be a number on the site to ask for help.

maxsteel86 agony auntIsn't there already a pill out there that is meant to delay your period? My girlfriend has to take them when she goes in for her swimming competitions sometimes so I know they exist. Cant remember the name though but I'm sure you can pick them up over the counter from a pharmacy

singlemomof1 agony auntThere is a way to take the pills to delay your cycle, but the friends I had do it would pop several pills at one time for a few days and then would take the ones that are always for the fourth week to make the cycle start. Why not call the doctor that prescribed them and ask a nurse.
