A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

This is embarrassing, but has anyone ever used repHresh? Or douche? Is it safe? And what if you do have a bad odor that comes and goes, mainly during or after your period? And what are normal and abnormal discharges? I'm on Yaz, and sefore and after my period, I get these nasty discharges. What should I do?

ive been douching for a while and i really want to stop as said before the vagina is self cleaning and makes it harder to fight off bacteria its not bad to douche but its better not to. dont start just dab water on the toilet roll when ur going to wipe then dry off.

From what you describe, all seems normal. Most women get a more thicker discharge before and after their period. However if the colour/onsistency changes, then see your doctor.

There are plenty of feminine hygiene products on the market but be aware that your vagina is delicate and by using too many of these, you could be making the problem worse.

I'm honestly not sure how Yaz affects women. It is a hormonal b/c so it affecting hormonal discharge seems logical. But if it's serious or really bothers you ask your doc.

Most women get some kind of discharge before and after their period. Its just the vagina cleaning itself because we are lucky enough to have an organ that can do that! You can use a douche, its safe. Because the vagina is self cleaning it is not necessary, and some docs advise against it because it can remove some of the helpful bacteria that fights off infection.

If the discharge is chunky or smelly it could be an infection requiring antibiotics. But since you said it's around your period it's probably just hormonal and normal. Use a scented pantyliner and perhaps some feminine wash or powder.
