My wife and I are considering getting her tubes tied. What are the chances of her getting pregnant even though her tubes have been tied? And is she able to give birth to a baby if she DOES become pregnant?

A reader, anonymous, writes (19 March 2008):

It would be much safer for you to have a vasectomy, the risks are higher for a women having sterilisation. If you don't want that you may wonder why she should want it either! There are loads of options which you could discuss with your doctor together. You would be asked whether if something should happen to the children you have, whether you would want more etc. Hard questions but that is because there are people who have lost their kids but been made infertile with operations and not been able to try again. That is sad although the risk is obviously miniscule. Think carefully and have lots of talks with experts. The interenet helps, but doctors also have very up to date information available and can help you during discussion.

AskEve agony auntFor a woman having her tubes tied, there is still a very slight chance that she CAN fall pregnant. The tubes are "tied" and can always, through time slacken again. The best way to avoid this happening is for her to have them CUT and not TIED!

don't make her do anything drastic that you can't go back on later... and if you do really want to do something really drastic then do it yourself" have a vesectamy.

But I say why do something you can't turn back when you can use much better contraception such as condoms, the pill, coils etc etc ?????????

Tisha-1 agony auntGood catch by maxsteel and mebee! Why didn't I think of that? It is true that vasectomy is another option for you as a couple, I'm quoting from webmd.com here: "Vasectomy is a safer, cheaper procedure that causes fewer complications than tubal ligation in women."

Lovesick24 agony auntNo, that would be impossible. My mom did that after she had my baby brother two years ago in June. She couldn't get pregnant if she had that done.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (18 March 2008):

Tisha-1 agony auntSounds like the chances are very slim for her to get pregnant after tubal ligation. Here's a link for some medically reviewed informtion:

http://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/tubal-ligation-and-tubal-implants

As far as giving birth again after the ligation, it sounds like that wouldn't be a problem for her, assuming all goes well with such an unlikely pregnancy!

All the best.

A female reader, Jmo United States +, writes (18 March 2008):

Jmo agony auntDon't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure it is pretty close to impossible. These days it's a pretty common procedure to have them cauterized or cut or both. As far as what to do on the extremely off chance that she becomes pregnant I'm pretty sure that she could still give birth... but once again don't quote me on that. Hope I helped.-Jmo
